How I started collecting emails

Lucy Werner PR Tips

There are swathes of marketing terminology such as ‘growing your list’ which is what collecting peoples email means. Read how I began to do this and grew to 1,000 sign-ups in one year.

Below I will outline the different methods I use to collect emails and which perform the best for me.

1. Mailchimp
This used to be a free service but is now paid for. I use it because for me it has the best functionality for using your own branding & design which is important to me. It’s also a system that allows me to safely store the data, adhering to GDPR rules and I can email my audience in one hit. I’ve also hired some help to segment the data so I can email my audience about different subjects. (A bit advanced for me so not done yet but on my 2020 to do list).

2. Link Tree
Instead of having one link on my Instagram page, I pay to use Link Tree. It is a service that allows you to have multiple links. As I have a Mailchimp account, I can include what is called an API code within Link Tree so when you check my insta bio you can automatically sign up for updates.

3. SquareSpace
Hadrien and I LOVE SquareSpace. Unlike when you use a webdeveloper you can edit your website yourself very easily whenever you like. I tend to create the build and do the words and Hadrien design hacks over the top. SquareSpace has a ready built pop-up box which again links back to a code from Mail Chimp to collect my emails - easy.

4. Thinkific
This is the platform I use to build and host my online courses. Obviously, the courses are not always right for everyone but you have to sign-up to peruse and it automatically adds these names to my email list. Thinkific does a provide an option for those users signing up so they can choose to sign-up or not.

5. Downloads
Sometimes known as lead magnets because they are tools to pull people new towards you. As part of my book, I’ve created a range of free templates that you can download to do the exercises. I also promote them with corresponding workshops or talks I do which sends a lot of traffic my way.

So… I guess you are wondering which is the most effective?
