Interview with Gina Clarke

What’s your name and where do you come from? Gina Clarke, Hampshire

Tell us a little bit about the publication(s) you work for? I’m freelance so whoever will have me but mainly national press. Most recently, Buzzfeed, the Independent, i Newspaper, the Telegraph, the Daily Express and Mail Online.

When is the best time of day/week/month for someone to pitch a story to you? Monday afternoon/Tuesday. Once all the ‘jobs’ are out of the way for the week.

Do you need a press release or will a well thought out pitch email be enough for a story to get written? If I’m working with numbers I’d like to see a press release, I worked for an economist website for 6 months last year and with 800 words to fill I needed everything they could give me. If it’s a human story (which I tend to deal with mostly at the moment) just a quick introduction to yourself and the situation. We can save all the details for a chat over the phone.

How many press releases do you receive on a weekly basis (roughly speaking)? I tend not to count them but at least 50, sometimes 100.

Name one of your favourite start-ups? It’s a bit quirky but I love Elephants don’t forget as I find artificial intelligence fascinating. I started writing about them and then I’ve gone on to help them with award entries and various PR opportunities.

Quick fire round

Apple or Android? Apple all the way.
Mac or PC?  Mac…
Apples for hands or melons for feet? Who needs feet right?
Name two chocolate bars you would put together to make a super bar Snickers and Twix.
